Koh Samui: A Paradise
For Diving
Koh Samui is an island that is located
in the gulf of Thailand in the Surat Thani
Province. It is an island off the
east coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand,
close to the mainland Surat Thani town.
It is Thailand's third largest island, rich
with plenty of natural resources, white
sandy beaches, coral reefs and coconut trees.
The word Koh means island in Thai language.
The Koh Samui is about an hour and half
by air to the south of Bangkok.
Island Samui has wonderful scenic beauty
as it is full of lovely green foliage due
to variety of coconut palms and other trees.
The quiet beaches that are away from the
tourist areas are worth visiting. Coral
bay in Koh Samui is a wonderful place to
relax and unwind. The lush green and beautiful
gardens and butterflies that add to the
eco friendliness of the surroundings make
the place a versatile paradise on earth.
It was only in the early 1970s that the
first travellers who came to this island
travelling on the back of a coconut boat.
For years, after that the island just
had a few bungalows and a handful of travellers.
Things started to change however, in the
early 1990s when tourists started arriving
in full boats and since then the place
has soared in its popularity. Samui is now
the second most popular place as an island
destination in Thailand (second to Phuket).
Koh Samui may not be the country’s most
beautiful island but it is still an oasis
of natural beauty with its white sandy beaches,
dazzling coral, luscious lagoons, picturesque
waterfalls, swaying coconut trees and crystal
clear water. As a result, one of the most
emerging industries in the region is the
tourism industry that is slowly gaining
momentum.
